QUEENS PINCH VINEYARD MUDGEE AUSTRALIA
Newsletter, October 2009 Queens Pinch awarded Most Outstanding Red at Mudgee Wine Show Flourishing boutique winery, Queens Pinch, has taken out three major awards at the 2009 Mudgee Wine Show with their first independent vintage, the 2006 Queens Pinch Cabernet Sauvignon. Winning trophies for Best Red Wine of the Show and Best Cabernet Sauvignon, and a gold medal in Class 19 Open Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 Queens Pinch Cabernet Sauvignon was only one point short of taking out the award for most outstanding wine of the Show. “As unusual as it may be for a small winery to make such an impact,” said Winemaker, Frank Newman, “we are delighted to have done it with our first vintage, and we’re hoping our wines will continue to create waves locally and across the country.” Newman, who moved from South Australia to Mudgee after more than 30 years with top names like Penfolds and Angoves, has a simple philosophy: respect the fruit, and let it dictate the techniques. This has allowed him to successfully create wines that display regionality, character and elegance – Queens Pinch wines are no exception. Owned by the Andrew Buchanan family, Queens Pinch is located in the Mudgee region, one of Australia’s most renowned wine districts. Particularly celebrated for its rich red varieties, Mudgee’s concentration of individual boutique wineries and small production volumes, has meant regional wines are highly sought after. And for Queens Pinch, with some prominent regional awards under the belt, it’s only a matter of time before the label takes pride of place on the shelves of boutique cellars around the country. And who knows what future vintages will bring.
